Kid Cudi & The Indie Cow

Hate is a strong word and since there seems to be some sort of agreement among all music blogs to only comment positively, and with a certain positive enthusiasm, on stuff, I will try to make this as fair a post as humanly possible.

It seems as though hip(-hop)ster Kid Cudi has had great success milking the indie scene so far, especially with his 2009 album Man On The Moon: The End of Day, which I congratulate him on because the (nightmare) songs featuring MGMT and Ratatat are quite GOOD! Well, the milking continues serving us two brand new (about two weeks old) samples of Band of Horses and Vampire Weekend songs. Hands down pretty cool for a rapper to go ahead and get inspired by the indie scene, because it honestly doesn’t sound like anything I have heard before (almost) but… beyond that I have to get real and say these aren’t that amazingly good. I mean, he’s just spitting some mediocre trivial rapshit, demanding the brains of a 6-year-old, all over some pretty decent songs here; and with no regards to the color of his skin whatsoever I only have one thing to say: Da milk is getting bad, njiaguh!

Oh, and should you like the songs, remember it’s just the originals talking!

‘The Prayer’ is also the name of a Bloc Party song.

[...] Liking this mixtape, however, made me aware of the reason why I in general don’t listen to hip-hop. Usually hip-hop only has a lyrical catch, but mostly when I listen to music that part of my brain is occupied anyway, because I’m reading or writing, so without the musical catchiness I lose focus and hence patience ultimately switching to something more euphonic. Layering indie and rap works really good because you’re satisfied both musically and lyrically which I think needs to be acknowledged by more artists, so we can get some original content rather than that Kid Cudi bullshit!
