Arhh… a DJ and his mixtape. I know that these are not the most represented topics in here – and for a good reason. Because in a never ending desert of house-DJ’s, remixes, french/german underground, Technics and Pioneer plus everything that comes with it, you have to dig through a lot of BS before you find something that is actually worth spending time on. Never the less, the forth-coming DJ Kicks release is definitely worth everybody’s attention.

John Maclean aka The Juan Maclean went behind the DJ pult and recorded the whole album live from his turntables. Impressive! And it seems there will be a lot of diversity aswell. The setlist includes a so far non-released J.M. track titled: ”feel so good”, on which LCD Soundsystem’s pretty pianobasher and long time partner, Nancy Whang will be participating – probably better known as the female voice on the clubdarling ”One Day”. Tunes that can be traced back to as far as 1988, though with a facelift, is also to be found on the record. The drumloops are played by the late Jerry Fuchs, who was killed last year after he fell down an elevator shaft at a party in N.Y. Fuchs delivered the drums in the Juan Maclean live band and was an earlier member of LCD Soundsystem. R.I.P. L

You’re probably wondering – ”Why would I wanna listen to this on my stereo, when I think DJ’s suck?” I’ll tell you: The Juan Maclean is inspired for his own disco-dance-punk-house-music from back in the days when he used to play in the Rhode Island postpunk/electro band Six Finger Sattelite – a band I personally find very interesting and highly recommend – mostly for the music, but also for the laughs..

The DJ kicks series is released by !K7 records and is set to be out April 27th. Thus he will be joining artists suchs as Booka Shade, Erlend Øye, Carl Craig, Burial and more. When he is not selling DJ albums for !K7, he is doing it for James Murphy on DFA records, where he is signed and has released his debut album ”The Future Will Come”.
