Introducing: Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt!
Volunteering at your local independent radio station has its perks. In my case, it’s learning about new and exciting music. I have been reviewing new CDs for cataloguing the stations massive library, and had the pleasure of discovering Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt!
While I am excited about this band, the exclamation mark (!) is part of the name. Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt! have an affinity for punctuation and this is just a part of their hyperactive, garish weirdness. Visit their myspace or website and you’ll understand what I’m talking about. It’s not hard to imagine their web design being done by some excitable kid with Attention Deficit Disorder. While the sites are somewhat obnoxious and gaudy, they are appropriately reflective of TPDR’s sound, self described as ”sorta dance-soul music, like synthed out Otis Redding covers on fast forward.” While I like me some Otis, a fairer comparison might be lo-fi AnCo meets Man Man.
Their debut album, fully titled, I LOVE YOU! I LOVE YOU! I LOVE YOU AND I’M IN LOVE WITH YOU! HAVE AN AWESOME DAY! HAVE THE BEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE!!, was dropped May 4th, 2010 on David Byrne’s Luaka Bop label and has some killer tracks, including “Snakebites,” “Snowday,” “Grouphug,” and “My Favorite Hair.” The tragedy of these songs is that the FUCKING FCC doesn’t like explicative language on the air, meaning the best songs of TPDR will go unheard at the station. That’s why I’m here now.
